Patagonia Swiftcurrent Expedition Wader Review
The Swiftcurrent Expedition wader from Patagonia is built for true anglers and anyone that wants to stay warm and dry in the wettest river conditions. I have been wearing this wader for just under a year and have found they can hold up to wading in some gnarly Montana conditions while allowing swift movements with ease. I have found this feature rich wader to be one of the best on the market.
When I say feature rich, I mean it. let's start from the top. Adjustable, padded shoulder straps provide both the perfect fit and comfort throughout the day even when wearing a backpack or sling. No more straps digging into your neck or shoulders. From there, the Expedition includes a waterproof internal pocket along with the easy access outer zippered pocket that is a great stash for indicators, fly box, or floatant. Zippered hand warmer pockets keep your thumbs safe when rowing but provide that extra boost of warmth when walking around your favorite Montana river in the rain and wind.
When conditions are more favorable and you need some extra air after your 2-mile jaunt down river, just unclip the front of the wader and push down to let your torso breathe. In the Spring and Fall when the water is frigid but sunny and 75 is the forecast, this is the best feature you can have. Included with the Expedition wader is the fanciest, comfiest wader belt available. Partially elastic and partially tough webbing the Secure-stretch belt can hold up a can of bear spray and remain comfortable with no sag.
Articulated knees on Swiftcurrent line of waders make climbing over logs or scrambling up a river bank as easy as it can be in waders. During the scramble when your right foot slips on loose rock, your knee that slams down into the hill is protected by your removable knee pads. I didn't realize this feature was so valuable until it was well beyond valuable. Nice for kneeling and re-lacing wading boots as well. Next, the incorporated gravel guard has a portion of their Black Hole material allowing water to escape easily from under the elastic and allow the wader to dry at a rapid rate. The last feature that really brings the wader together is the anatomical neoprene booties that provide exceptional comfort under any wading boot. Even more, the wader is made of 90% recycled materials.
While we carry a pile of waders here in our Bozeman fly shop, the Patagonia Swiftcurrent Expedition has been my favorite for comfort, breathability, durability and warmth in cold shitty weather when fishing Montana rivers. The features are a nice added bonus that take your angling to the next level. I forgot to mention the elastic pockets around the chest perfectly hold up to four tall boys. Just in case you were wondering. At $649 for the standard and $749 for the zip front you get an incredible wader at a phenomenal price. I recommend this wader to serious anglers that put their gear through the ringer or if you are searching for the absolute best and reliable waders on the market.
