Important Spring Fly Fishing Information

Spring is in full swing here in Bozeman Montana and fishing has been great. Dry fly action is finally moving with BWO's and skwalas, we have been catching fish on streamers and nymphing has been good all day. Here is how to find the most up-to-date information for fishing the Bozeman area rivers.

As fly fishing conditions change in the spring it is important to get credible information before you hit the river. When I'm headed out this time of the year there are a few things I always check before driving to the river. Weather and streamflow are the most important factors that determine how fishing will be.

In the spring, and all the time for that matter, drastic changes in streamflow directly affect the fishing. If flows are rising rapidly you can expect fishing to be slower than normal and to discoloration in the system. During high water Montana streams and rivers can become dangerous to float and wade. If flows are falling and the river is clearing you can generally expect fishing to be pretty darn good.

Spring weather can be unpredictable in Montana. When I check the weather I'm focused on what the wind conditions will look like and also if thunderstorms are expected. Wind is my limiting factor if the wind is sustained 20+ mph, I'll find a different activity for the day. SW Montana T-storms can come and go very quickly. If that is the case, I'll plan my day around the storm or find a different area to fish. You definitely want to avoid being out in a thunderstorm holding you 9' 5wt. lightning rod.
