3 The Upper Madison is showing signs of life -- bug life. A few salmonflies have been spotted, but the hatch hasn't really popped off yet. PMDs are also getting going, as are the caddis. Throwing a big dry fly, will generally result in a few eats, but nymphing has been much more productive. Midday, in the slower water, you can find fish up, eating PMDs. In the evening, their diet tends to switch to caddis....

2 The Upper Madison is one of the better options around. The water clarity is good and the flows have dropped to a manageable level. There are some fish rising to caddis, but you might have to work to find them. Nymphing will be most productive. Stonefly nymphs, caddis pupa and general attractor patterns are all working to an extent. The streamer bite wasn't great on Thursday, but a few fish ate black and olive streamers....

3 The Upper Madison flows are sitting around 1600 CFS near Cameron. The water still has color to it but has been fishing pretty well. We still haven't heard much for fish coming up to the surface but due to the cold weather. Expect to see some Caddis in the evenings when the weather warms back up. There isn't much for dry-fly fishing but the nymphing has been good. Pat's Rubberlegs, worms, caddis pupa and mayfly nymphs are all working. The fish are still pushed up along the banks, so fish some of that water before hopping...

3 The Upper Madison is steadily on the drop from some of the colder weather. The water is still high so wade fishing is still difficult but manageable. Stay on the banks and fish a nymph rig upstream tight to the banks with a large black Rubberlegs and a worm below. Look for softer water along the banks, these will be the spots that trout are taking refuge. Getting your flies down is key while fishing...
