Evening fun with Brown Drakes

This time of year, a person can flip a coin to decide which hatch they want to chace. Last night Toby and I decided to chase some Brown Drakes on the Lower. This particular night, the hatch lived up to the hype and expectations. We didn’t leave the shop until after closing around 7pm. As soon as we got out of the truck we could instantly see risers. Toby jumped out of the truck, tied a fly on and caught 3 or 4 fish before I even got my rod out of the case. We didn’t see too many Naturals but it didn’t seem to matter. I tied on a big Drake and dropped an X-Caddis off the back. The fish ate them both but the Caddis eats were a little too subtle for the failing light and aging eyes. The Drake bites were a little more violent and obvious to me. All in all we had a good time, caught some fish, didn’t get eaten by Rattlesnakes and saw some good freinds that just happened to float by doing the same thing we were.

I don’t usually fish the evenings so this was a nice change from my normal meet at 7am back by 4 or 5 type of thing. If you haven’t tried it in a while, take off from work, grab some gas station food and a drink and head to the Lower for a few hours. You might be surprised.
