Fishing’s Heating Up

The wait is over. The majority of the rivers in the area are clearing up and fishing really well. The lower Madison has been fishing well right through runoff and now the upper is looking good also. The Gallatin lost most of its color the last couple days and is starting to green up nicely. The Yellowstone is really the only hold out around, but it too is almost there.

The bugs are also here. Salmonflies and Goldenstones have moved through the Lower Madison and have started showing up on the upper river. There are also bugs out in the lower canyon on the Gallatin. We haven’t heard anything yet, but it shouldn’t be long before we see some on the Yellowstone as well. Apart form the big bugs there is a good mix of PMD’s, Yellow Sallies, various Caddis and Brown Drakes on most of the rivers.

River flows, water clarity and bug activity are all falling into place, and overall this is one of the most exciting times to be fishing Southwest Montana. It can be a bit intimidating with the variety of changing conditions, but never fear we are here to get you on the fish. Stop by the shop or take one of our guides out for the day. Either way we’ll set you up for success and a great time on the water!
