While a heavy snow pack is a blessing for mid summer and late season anglers, it can be a real challenge this time of year. The runoff is just now getting started and we’ve been seeing some crazy things going on already. There is a massive landslide on the Snake near Jackson, WY which may ruin that part of the river and adversely effect the South Fork as well. The Bighorn is flooding over I-90 near Hardin to the point that the dam made a substantial flow reduction with hope of reducing flooding…it went from 8500 cfs to 3500 cfs instantly. We’ve seen some localized flooding around Bozeman.
And then there’s the Yellowstone in eastern Montana the flows of which are ridiculous! A 125000 jump in cfs in less than 24 hours! Needless to say, Paddlefishing might be a little tricky this weekend. Check out this article for more information.
