Ice Off is Starting on Hebgen and Quake Lakes

I just wanted to mention to those of you who are chomping at the bit to hit a fresh lake, Hebgen and Quake Lakes are starting to ice off. Last word from this afternoon was the North shore of Hebgen is open and about half of Quake is open. I heard a couple people were going to launch boats off the beach on Hebgen but I don’t think you can launch on Quake yet. Best flies at ice out are usually Leeches, Buggers, Crawdads and Midges. A person can have some great success slowly stripping a size 10 or 12 Scud around the ice shelf if you can reach. When these lakes start thawing out, it usually means Cliff and Wade are only a few days behind depending on the wind.
