Intricate Bay Lodge Wrap | Bozeman Fly Shop
I’ve been back from the family trip to Intricate Bay Lodge off Lake Iliamna in Alaska for a week now! I literally hit the ground running and have been back on the since getting home. Our trip will go down as the best family vacation that we have ever been on, and that’s saying a lot! It’s hard to find a place that will cater to everyone in a group of 9, but IBL went above and beyond to deliver an amazing week.
The week ended with back to back days floating Moraine Creek in Katmai National Park. Sockeye Salmon started to “drop” their eggs and digging out redds mid-week. The Rainbows were hungry for eggs, happily swinging up to 10’ to gobble up our egg patterns. It didn’t matter if they were weighted, dead-drifted, or dragging across the surface. Everyone ended up getting several Rainbows in the 24”-26” range for the week with the largest topping out at 27”.
Spending the week with my family, especially my two sons, in such an amazing place is one of those experiences that will stay with me forever. Watching my little 10-year old running down the river time and time again tight to a fish that is nearly half his height just made me laugh. My 18-year-old isn’t really into fishing, but even he was in awe of the Alaskan scenery, wildlife, and the fish too. My hope for them, when it comes to fly-fishing, is that they will come to appreciate the natural world through the connection that fly-fishing provides. The fish and scenery are great, but it is the appreciation for it all that will help them to be good stewards for the sport and the environment in the years ahead. I think that something may have “clicked” with them both on this trip!
We found Intricate Bay Lodge through our good friends at Yellow Dog Fly Fishing after sifting through about 15 different options in Alaska. They all looked like great places, but IBL was the perfect size for our group and ideally located. If Alaska is on your list of places to fish, be sure to talk to Tom or Camille at Yellow Dog and put the folks at IBL at the top of your list whether you are looking for a lodge or river camping trip.
