The Spring opener for Montana’s small streams and rivers is finally upon us . This year, around Bozeman, we should be looking at better than average water conditions. Some streams might be a little too high and off color to completely live up to their potential, but in general most should still fish better than most years at this time. Most of us are extra excited about the Upper Madison River. The opener is usually pretty decent but this year it should be extra productive given the lower snow pack. My only disclaimer is that it has been raining a little the last few days and the forcast is calling for more rain and a little cooler up to and including the weekend. The weather won’t have too much negative effect on the Madison but might change the conditions of some smaller streams feeding the Gallatin River for example. The positive effect of the weather should mean a few less people fishing and more insects hatching. So enjoy yourselves this weekend and lets get the season off to a good start.
