Talking Yellowstone River

The talk of the “town” the last week is the stellar fishing that we’ve been seeing on the Yellowstone River. Although the big bugs have moved through most of the river outside YNP, you can still find some fish looking for them up above Yankee Jim Canyon and on up into the Black Canyon inside YNP.

We’ve had boats from Carbella all the way down near Columbus the last few days and everyone has been having good days, so keep the stone in mind for your 4th of July river trip. Expect to find plenty of fish in Paradise Valley eating small to mid-sized attractor dries over the next few days as the myriad of Caddis, PMD’s, and Yellow Sallies continue to bring fish up to the surface. Down below Livingston, don’t expect to get as much dry fly fishing yet, but they will start to get on Chubby Chernobyl’s and various hopperish patterns soon. For the time being, stick to either stripping streamers or dead drifting buggers with a mid-sized general purpose nymph like a Prince Nymph.

TalkiThe river is still a little high, so wade fishing is a little tougher for most folks. It’s a great time of year to be on the Yellowstone right now so have fun and give us a call if you would like to experience it with one of our professional guides!
