The Big Hole River Re-Opened

Good news! The Big Hole River just reopened sections that had been previously closed due to drought conditions.

The few reports we’ve gotten from out there have been good in the areas that have been open. The areas that just re-opened are a couple of the better wading sections so keep an eye out for Brown Trout Redds and avoid them when possible.

Big Hole River Reopened for Fishing
Restrictions recently lifted by
Montana Fish, Wildlife &
Parks

Section I: Saginaw Bridge on Skinner Meadows Road to the mouth of the North Fork Big Hole River is open to fishing in accordance with the Big Hole River Drought Management Plan effective Friday, 9/22/2017. Section I has reached reopening criteria of 40 cfs or above for 7 consecutive days.

Section V: Notch Bottom Fishing Access Site to Confluence of Big Hole River with Jefferson River is open to fishing in accordance with the Big Hole River Drought Management Plan effective today, 9/25/2017. Section V has reached reopening criteria of 200cfs for 7 consecutive days.

The sections of the Big Hole River were closed to fishing for a period of time in September due to low river flows.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks reopened the entire Big Hole River to fishing. The entire Big Hole River is now open to fishing without restrictions due to low flows or high water temperatures. All requests for voluntary participation in the Drought Management Plan to protect the fishery are lifted.

The Big Hole River Drought Management Plan operates until October 30 for river flow and we will continue to monitor conditions. A recent weather change for cool temperatures and precipitation drastically changed river conditions for the better, giving some much needed relief after a hot and dry summer.

Visit Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks for details of fishing restrictions.
