The Hackle Debacle
The biggest buzz in the tying industry this year isn’t a new fly or new product. You’ll never guess, its hair extensions using prime Whiting hackle. This new fad that has drained the industry of most of its hackle supply originated in Boulder, CO. It’s not really new. It has been around for about five years now as far as I can tell, but has only recently become widely popular. It seems to be most popular in California and Florida, but the fashionistas are buying from fly shops all over the country. They use the long feathers from saddles mainly so there are plenty of necks still around but saddles are getting harder and harder to find.
